The Treatise Project

The Contemporary Music Research Unit and PureGold present the final concert in the term-long Treatise Project, performed by the Ligeti Quartet.

Indeterminacy in music loosens the composer’s control, thereby expanding the performer’s role and licensing greater-than-normal degrees of legitimate variation between renditions. Even so, this music is rarely presented in ways that highlight these features. The Treatise Project has aimed to address this gap by bringing together differing interpretations of the same excerpt from Cornelius Cardew’s monumental graphic score Treatise.

This evening’s concert is the culmination of The Treatise Project and the final event in PureGold. It features six performances of Treatise pages 115–126, including one presented by the Ligeti Quartet, played one after another.
