Crossing is a study in probabilities. Throughout the piece, the probability that the main thematic material will be what the musicians are playing varies. That probability is determined by the combination of three cosine functions. Each instrument has a different experience traversing the material, but there are points when the probability determined by the function is so high that they will play thematic material.
