Years ago I studied composition with Ernst Krenek who introduced me to the 12-tone system of writing music. I dedicated this piece to him. While it is actually written based on the strict 12-tone system, as usual, I managed to tweak the twelve tones (that make up its theme) enough so that it satisfied my harmonic ear.

Biography

Julie Mandel majored in music at UCLA and studied composition with Ernst Krenek and Eric Zeisl. Her Trio for Flute, Viola and Harp, premiered recently at Queens College, and is published by Theodore Presser. Her String Quartet #3, recently premiered at Lake Forest College in Chicago, is also available through Theodore Presser. Her work, “The Subway Suite”, which featured The Meridian String Quartet, is a full-length theater piece (music, lyrics and concept by Ms. Mandel) was produced by Queens College, NY, Her one-act opera, “I Wish, I Wish, I Wish” was given a staged reading at The Thalia Theatre. “A Glorious Day”, her musical based on a Shaw play . was recently produced by the Blue Grass Opera Co. in Lexington, Ky.

Her chamber works have been performed by the American Chamber Ensemble, The Seattle Chamber Players, The Stony Brook String Quartet. She is Treasurer of The New York Women Composers, and Concerts Director of The Long Island Composers Alliance. She is the recipient of Meet The Composer grants and of many ASCAP Grants.

As you can tell from the above, I love to write music......of all kinds. First inspired to write when, as a child, I heard Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue.
