Josh Spear - Paris (nach Ravel)

Workshop performance video

This is the slow movement from a quartet that I wrote for a friend's art show in Dresden. It is a loop from Ravel's own string quartet, specifically the slow movement. Here it is imagined on vinyl with the quartet as the record player, caught on the first phrase. Gradually the noise and action of the record player comes to the foreground.

I am a British composer-performer and proud member of the group Bastard Assignments. I create works for concert, for video and for stage. I am an artistic research fellow at Norwegian Academy of Music where my project is focussed on collaboration, specifically intimacy as a condition for collaboration. I studied music at University of Manchester and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. In the past year I was commissioned by Hellerau Dresden and Schaubuhne Lindenfels Leipzig to create a webseries with composer John Moran. I was also commissioned by Hellerau to create a video for the results of the US election. I created a Drag Film about the First Ladies. With Bastard Assigments, I have performed at Aldeburgh Festival, Spor, HCMF, Nonclassical, LCMF, Royal Academy of Art and on BBC Radio 3 numerous times.
