Trigger Warning: Depression

 

See how they run; is a snapshot taken from my experience of depression. Sometimes, I would quietly sit staring at a wall while individual tears drew their lines down my face, eventually combining in heavy droplets on my chin.

The semi-colon is a symbol for depression awareness, first used by Amy Bleuel and Project Semicolon in 2013.

Biography

As a multi-genre chamber musician, orchestral pianist and music director, Yshani has performed at venues including Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Barbican Theatre and various West End Theatres. She has performed at events including the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Oxford Lieder Festival and Kammer Klang, and directed music for shows for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. Yshani has performed premieres by Charlotte Bray, Seán Clancy, Laurence Crane, Joe Cutler, Gavin Higgins, Matt Kaner, Ryan Latimer Benjamin Oliver and Kate Whitley. She has also commissioned works for piano, Commodore 64 and bespoke 8-bit synthesisers, which she has performed at the National Theatre Riverstage, The Place Theatre and the All Your Bass National Videogames Arcade festival.

Yshani’s composition "Hedgehog" for nine isolated musicians recently went viral on social media. This led to further commissions of micro-pieces, including by the Musicians’ Union for members and non-members alike during Lockdown. Yshani also writes music for comedy including for Pippa Evans at The London Palladium and BBC Radio 4, as well as being an improviser including with Olivier award winning Showstopper! The Improvised Musical, The Comedy Store and Nina Conti: In Your Face. Yshani was Arranger & MD for Olivier nominated Goat by Ben Duke for Rambert Dance Company.
