String Quartet

Spend an evening with author, journalist, critic and BBC Radio 3 broadcaster Kate Molleson for a celebration of her book Sound Within Sound.

The evening includes a discussion of Sound Within Sound and performances inspired by the composers referenced in the book.

A ‘mixtape’ format intersperses movements from Christian Mason’s Tuvan Songbook with other types of ‘song’ - the translucent modernism of Ruth Crawford Seeger, the electronic and pop aesthetic of Tanya Tagaq, and Beethoven's Cavatina, the highly original 5th movement of his Op 130 quartet.

For their final concert as Peter Maxwell Davies Ensemble in Residence, the Ligeti Quartet showcase three works by Cambridge University PhD composers, and the winner of Homerton College's 2019 Composition Competition.

What does the brain sound like? Neuroscientist and composer Cliff Kerr explores what happens when performers become composers by translating their brain activity in real time into musical scores. Leveraging recent advances in non-invasive EEG hardware and time series analysis methods information is extracted from the brain.
